A Personal Message From Thomas Rockwell

For generations of Americans, The Saturday Evening Post was a mirror of American society. I am proud that my father, Norman Rockwell, painted 322 covers for this magazine over a 47-year period, and I am always amused and delighted to see the artwork for these covers wherever it is displayed.

Now, the best of these covers, along with other significant covers from other talented artists, are included in an exciting new collection. Each Saturday Evening Post cover is meticulously reproduced in full color on a beautiful silver and gold ingot.

I know that my father and the other fine artists would approve of this wonderful collection. It embodies the spirit of my father's art and captures the romance of The Saturday Evening Post, while at the same time creating an enduring collection that will be treasured for many years to come.

Without thinking too much about it in specific terms, I was showing the America I knew and observed to others who might not have noticed. My fundamental purpose is to interpret the typical American. I am a story teller."-Norman Rockwell

Norman Rockwell came to symbolize The Saturday Evening Post. His iconic covers were always entertaining and inspiring, uniquely capturing the spirit of the nation.

One of Rockwell's most beloved covers is his Triple Self Portrait for an issue of The Saturday Evening Post in 1960 that contained the first excerpt from his autobiography. A quirky work of art, it shows Rockwell in the mirror as he saw himself (an ordinary, aging artist in his mid-60's) and on the canvas as he wanted to be perceived (youthful, dashing, and confident). The third self portrait is a rough sketch attached to the left side of the canvas.

Like all of his legendary covers, Rockwell filled his artwork with extra details. Most notable in this work of art are the self portraits of great artists such as Rembrandt and Picasso that he used for inspiration and which are attached to the right side of the canvas.

Mead Schaeffer was Norman Rockwell's best friend, and — like Rockwell — he regularly provided covers for The Saturday Evening Post. He was renowned as an illustrator for classic books like Moby-Dick, but during World War II he chronicled the heroism and determination of the American military. Many of his military paintings are among more than 40 of his Saturday Evening Post covers.

Another major part of Schaeffer's life was fishing. In fact, he was known to describe himself as a full-time fisherman and a part-time artist. He traveled across America, sketching different landscapes and exploring the rivers and streams for new stories and new ways to portray his love of fishing.

The Fish are Jumping is a whimsical view of a frustrated angler. While the angler is having trouble tying his fly, the fish are literally jumping out of the water all around him ... the perfect encapsulation of the angler's worst nightmare.

Inspired by the famous Saturday Evening Post cover, the gold-layered silver ingot is a true work of art in its own right.

One of The Saturday Evening Post's most anticipated issues was its special Christmas edition — especially at the height of the magazine's popularity when it often displayed a Norman Rockwell Christmas painting on the cover. The first Rockwell Christmas cover was in 1916, which was just his sixth cover for the magazine, while the last was 40 years later in 1956.

Rockwell's 1926 Christmas cover remains one of his most endearing. Known by many titles, including Santa at Globe and Santa's Good boys, it shows a jolly Santa examining a globe with a magnifying glass while holding a book entitled Good boys.

Among the small but fascinating details in Rockwell's famous painting are a quill pen behind Santa's ear and what appears to be a halo over Santa's head.

The Runaway is one of Norman Rockwell's most admired and cherished Saturday Evening Post covers. It captures the essence of America in the 1950's. At first glance, it portray's a simple and friendly meeting in a typical diner ... until the young boy's bundled possessions on the floor show him as a runaway who is being cared for by a kindly policeman.

Like many of his famous Saturday Evening Post covers, Rockwell used real- life models for this painting. The setting was the Howard Johnson's restaurant in Pittsfield, Massachusetts, while the policeman was Rockwell's neighbor (a Massachusetts State Trooper) and the boy was local elementary school student Eddie Locke.

I ran away from home when I was a kid. Pretty soon it began to get dark and a cold wind sprang up and moaned in the trees. So I went home.

Between 1916 and 1963, Norman Rockwell created more than 300 covers for The Saturday Evening Post. One of his most popular covers was the endearing Sunset, a simple yet evocative image that captures the essence of young love. Also known as Puppy Love and Spooners, it first appeared in 1926 and stood in stark contrast to the exuberance and excesses of the Roaring Twenties.

The painting shows a young boy and his girlfriend sitting on a homemade bench, watching the sunset. Filled with the romance of young love, it also shows a sad puppy and an abandoned fishing pole in the foreground – symbols that time moves on and priorities always change.

I call myself an illustrator but I am not an illustrator. Instead I paint storytelling pictures which are quite popular but unfashionable.
